Adult Training

Fast Start:

Videos for all levels of Scouting are available at the Council Office in Costa Mesa. Call 714-546-4990 ext. 1218 or 151 for more information.

Basic Leader Training:

  • New Leader Essentials (NLE) is an introduction session lasting 90 minutes.
  • Youth Protection is mandatory for any adult working with our scouts.
  • Leader Specific Training (LST) New Leader Essentials (NLE) is a pre-requisite for this training.
    • Scoutmasters (This includes assistant scout masters)
    • Troop committee members. We recommend that at least one adult (preferably both) in each family receive this training. If you do not receive this training, you are still encouraged to attend troop committee meetings.
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills provides specialized training. This is required for all scoutmasters and assistant scout masters.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is an introduction to pack camping, BSA resources for camping. It is mandatory that at least one adult is BALOO trained when filing a tour permit.

Wood Badge focuses on strengthening each volunteer's ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults.

High Adventure Training (offered 3 times a year). teaches the finer points of camping, backpacking and hiking. Please note that High Adventure patches need a HA trained leader.

  • Basic Backpacking Awareness
  • Winter Backpacking

Roundtables are held in each district and offer monthly support for program ideas. See calendars for Roundtable dates.
