Lowe campground entails mainly a downward hike of about 3 miles from Eaton Saddle where the cars are parked. The hike is almost totally on a fire road that has been washed out of significant dirt, due to recent rains, leaving a lot of rocks that one must take care walking upon. An interesting feature of the hike is that the fire road goes through Mueller Tunnel to allow passage through a large rock hillside. While passing through the tunnel, which is quiet dark, one has to avoid significant water dropping from the ceiling. While using this "trail" one may come across bicycle riders using mountain bikes or a group or individuals out for a day hike. The camp ground, where the scouts stayed, is a former resort so structures such as retaining walls and cement slabs are dotted about the site. Trees shade most of the tent locations. The campground is not flat but rests along a hill. It is flat where the scouts pitch their tents. The return trip is almost all up hill so we should expect slower progress back to the cars as a result. A hiker can average 2.5 miles per hour with a full pack hiking toward the campsite. Scouts and adults with heavy packs might do well with speeds around 2 miles per hour coming out from the campground due to the elevation change. |
